Beauty and the Beast in Sydney 2023 [review]

Beauty and the Beast, one of Disney’s much-loved classics, is back as a brand-new production presented by Disney Theatrical Productions Australia. This family-friendly show opened last night at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre, the perfect home for this extravagant show. I was lucky enough to be invited along and I have to say it’s one of the most visually spectacular shows I have seen in a long time. If you love musical theatre, this is a show that needs to be on your list for 2023.

TLDR – Disney has once again brought to life the beloved tale in a spectacle of art, technology and dance arrangements. With over 300 exquisite costumes, 119 wigs, and even some fireworks, the beautiful staging of this show is a feast for the senses. With resounding applause and a mid-performace standing ovation this is a must see for 2023.

The Story of Beauty and the Beast

If you have never read or seen the story on screen, Beauty and the Beast is a much-loved classic, based on a French fairytale by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont.

Belle, a book-loving beauty, lives in a small village and dreams of adventure. When her father is imprisoned by a beast, Belle offers to take his place as the Beast’s captive. The Beast, who was once a handsome prince, is cursed and can only be freed by true love.

As Belle and the Beast spend more time together, they develop a deep bond founded on compassion and understanding. Meanwhile, the arrogant Gaston tries to win Belle’s heart by any means necessary. Belle must choose between the two, and her choice speaks to the themes of the story: inner beauty and redemption.

Along the way, Belle befriends enchanted household items, including the charming candelabra Lumiere. Beauty and the Beast is a story of true love that sees beyond outward appearances and values what lies within.

“Based on the 1991 animated film, the original production of Beauty and the Beast played for more than 13 years on Broadway, remaining to this day one of the top 10 longest running shows in Broadway history, and touring to 37 countries worldwide.”

Opening Night Review

The production captured the essence of Beauty and the Beast with stunning visuals, captivating performances, and a heartwarming story. We immediately adored Belle, were floored by how handsome Gaston was and eventually come to love the Beast.

The costumes were exceptional

The stellar Australian principal cast includes Shubshri Kandiah as Belle, Brendan Xavier as Beast, and Jackson Head as Gaston. Each are perfect for their roles; indeed, the entire cast delivered a captivating and memorable performance that had me (and the rest of the audience) enthralled from start to finish.

The ensemble cast displayed remarkable chemistry, creating a sense of unity and energy that elevated the entire performance.

Cogsworth, Babette, Lumiere, Mrs Potts and Madame

Rohan Browne in the role of Lumiere was a particular favourite and shone front and centre during the literal showstopping Be Our Guest number. Gareth Jacobs as Cogsworth gave a performance that was every bit as wonderful as Bert Newtown’s 1996 role. And Jayde Westaby as Mrs Potts with the lovely young Chip pulled at the heart strings.

The venue for Beauty and the Beast in Sydney

The 2023 season of Beauty and the Beast is playing at the Capitol Theatre. One of the most iconic venues in Sydney, its grandeur is unmatched.

Located just a short walk from Central or Town Hall station, the Capitol has been hosting world-class performances for over a century. Its 2000 odd seats were filled opening night and the elaborate interior is a perfect fit for Beauty and the Beast.

What I especially love about the Capitol is that no matter where I have been seated, I have always had an excellent view of the stage. I have sat everywhere from the back row of the stalls to the upper level of the dress circle and enjoyed the performances.
