Sydney Staycations for Families: Best School Holiday Hotel Deals
Sydney hotels go all out for school holidays, more than any other time of year. Breakfast included, late checkout, a kids’ activity pack waiting in the room when you arrive. I’ve stayed at a fair few of these over the years with my own kids and now grandkids in tow, so I know which packages are worth the extra cost and which ones are just a fancier price tag on the same room.
If you ask me, Darling Harbour ticks the most boxes, with free and low cost activities right on your doorstep, family friendly food and good transport connections. But Parramatta and Olympic Park are worth a look too, especially if you want more space and fewer crowds. This guide covers the deals worth booking across all of them, so you’re not wasting a day of the holidays and you don’t need to go near an airport to get a break.

Let’s explore the best areas for family staycations in Sydney, starting with the entertainment hub of Darling Harbour. Each location offers unique advantages and I’ll show you how to combine comfortable accommodation with budget-friendly activities to create memorable experiences without breaking the bank.
Darling Harbour
Darling Harbour makes an excellent base for families, particularly those with younger children. The area’s compact layout means you can walk between major attractions in under 10 minutes and there’s no shortage of spots to rest or grab a meal when kids need a break. With free playgrounds, harbourside walks and multiple family-friendly attractions, you can easily fill several days without travelling far.
You can forget about transport logistics and focus on enjoying your time together.
Free Activities:
- Darling Harbour Playground – A modern play space with climbing frames, water games and slides. Best for ages 3-12. Allow 1-2 hours.
- Chinese Garden of Friendship – Entry fee applies but kids under 12 are free. School holiday programs often include origami and traditional games. The koi feeding (10am daily) is always popular.

Paid Attractions:
Monkey Baa Theatre – Professional theatre for young audiences. Shows priced from $25. Book ahead as school holiday performances usually sell out.
Australian Maritime Museum – Free entry to main galleries. Extra cost for submarine and vessel tours. School holiday workshops run most days (booking essential).
Merlin Entertainment Pass – Covers SEA LIFE Aquarium, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo and Madame Tussauds. Save 30% by booking online at least 24 hours ahead.

Hotels in Darling Harbour that are perfect for families
There are several family friendly hotels in Darling Harbour, and right now two of them have good school holiday deals.

Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour – Family Social Offer
Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour sits right on the waterfront, within walking distance of SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, Madame Tussauds and the Australian National Maritime Museum, so you can cover a lot of ground without needing to organise transport.

The Family Social Offer gives you a second room for kids at 50% off, which makes the nightly rate more manageable for families who need the extra space. Rooms with two double beds are available, and baby cots can be requested at no extra charge.
Kids under 12 eat free at buffet breakfast. The hotel’s Atelier restaurant has a Le Petit Menu for younger diners, and in-room dining is available if you’d rather eat without leaving the room after a long day out.
Over four nights during the school holidays, the hotel transforms one of its event spaces into a cinema with complimentary popcorn, table tennis, foosball and an arts and crafts station. Food and drinks are available to purchase. Specific nights and movie details are confirmed through reception when you book.
From $419 per night. Book directly with Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour.
Oaks Sydney Goldsbrough Suites
Oaks have three properties in Sydney, with their Goldsborough Apartments being the closest to Darling Harbour. The apartments are a generous size and the complex has an indoor swimming pool, which comes in handy over winter.
They have a stay two nights and get 30% off deal that you can find directly on their website.
Sydney City
The city centre has some of Sydney’s best free activities alongside the big-ticket ones, which makes it a good option if you’re watching your budget. Staying centrally means you can duck back to your room between outings, which matters more than you’d think when you’re travelling with kids of different ages. Here’s what I suggest for each age group:
For Little Ones (2-6):
- Royal Botanic Garden treasure hunts and duck spotting
- The Australian Museum
- Cook and Phillip Park indoor pool

For Primary Schoolers (7-12):
- Sydney’s Museums of History are all free. Visit Hyde Park Barracks for colonial history, the Justice and Police Museum for fascinating crime stories, or Susannah Place Museum in the Rocks for a glimpse of early Sydney life.
- Walk across the Harbour Bridge and climb the Eastern Pylon. For a bigger adventure, BridgeClimb Sydney offers school holiday deals.
- Explore the harbour on the Captain Cook hop-on-hop-off ferry or join a harbour cruise.

For Teens:
- Shopping at QVB and Pitt Street Mall
- Luna Park thrills – from the latest Stranger Things experience to classic rides
- Photography walks across the Harbour Bridge and around Circular Quay

Cockatoo Island
Cockatoo Island offers a “starter camping” experience for families, all the fun of sleeping under the stars, but with real bathrooms, hot showers and a cafe nearby. Whether you’re new to camping or an experienced outdoor family, this is a fun overnight or weekend escape. Read my full Cockatoo Island guide here.
You will find:
- Ready-set-up tents with beds and bedding
- Clean, modern bathroom facilities
- Full camp kitchen with BBQs
- Fire pit for marshmallow toasting
- Camp cinema for evening entertainment
What to Bring:
- Swimming gear for daytime activities
- Your own food or pre-order a BBQ pack
- Warm clothes (the harbour gets chilly at night)
- Torches for evening walks

Spend some time exploring the historic site, or just relax and toast some marshmallows. Check out their family itineraries for more ideas.
While Cockatoo Island offers a taste of harbour life, heading west to Parramatta provides families with a different perspective of Sydney, combining rich history with modern entertainment.
If you want something further from the city with horses and quad bikes thrown in, Glenworth Valley is another solid family camping option on the Central Coast.
Western Sydney
Western Sydney gives families more space and fewer crowds than the city centre, and the trade-off on travel time is worth it if you’re after a different pace. Parramatta has the history, the riverside walks and a solid food scene. Olympic Park is the pick for active families who want to actually use world-class facilities rather than just look at them. And further south-west, Warwick Farm adds a genuinely different setting with its racecourse surroundings and day spa. All three are easy to reach by train.
Parramatta
Parramatta has transformed into one of Sydney’s most family-friendly destinations, offering a mix of outdoor adventure, cultural experiences and modern entertainment. What makes it especially appealing for families is the combination of wide open spaces and urban amenities, plus it’s typically less crowded than the city centre during school holidays.
Here’s how to make the most of your Parramatta stay:
Outdoor Adventures:
- Lake Parramatta Bushland – Offers three marked walking tracks ranging from 15 to 45 minutes, a great way for testing your kids’ hiking legs. The indigenous foods garden provides an opportunity to teach children about bush tucker.
- Parramatta Park Playgrounds – Two major playgrounds cater to different age groups: Domain Creek Playground for younger children with its water play area, and Paperbark Playground for more adventurous climbers.

Cultural Experiences:
- Old Government House – Australia’s oldest public building comes alive during school holidays with colonial dress-ups and traditional games.
- Riverside Theatre – Book ahead for their school holiday programs, which often include interactive performances where kids can meet the cast afterward.
Modern Entertainment:
- Westfield Parramatta keeps teens happy with the latest fashion brands and a modern cinema complex.
- Church Street’s ‘Eat Street’ has become notably family-friendly, with many restaurants offering kids-eat-free deals during school holidays.
Check out our detailed guide of things to do in Parramatta for ideas.

The William Inglis Hotel – Signature Stay Package
The William Inglis is a five-star boutique hotel at Warwick Farm, about 40 minutes south-west of the CBD by train. It sits alongside the historic Inglis thoroughbred sales complex, so the setting is unlike anything else on this list. The rooftop pool overlooks Warwick Farm Racecourse, and there’s a day spa and fitness centre on site. Horse-mad kids will love that you can sometimes spot the horses training on the track from the pool deck early in the morning.

The Signature Stay package includes a $50 fuel voucher with any room booking of $250 or more, which takes some of the sting out of the drive if you’re coming from further out of Sydney.
The Newmarket Room runs an all-you-can-eat roast lunch every Sunday from 12pm to 3pm throughout winter. Kids under five eat free.
For something a bit different, hot-air balloon rides over South West Sydney are available, drifting above the racecourse and surrounding area.
From $250 per night, room only, until 31 August 2026. Book directly – The William Inglis Hotel.
