Weatherwise this month is one of the most humid of the summer. The warm temperatures make this a great time to explore some of the 100-plus beaches within the Sydney region.

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival
Over 16 days and nights, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival hosts a variety of events, from talks and exhibitions to parties culminating in the much loved Parade. This year’s festival kicks off on Valentine’s Day and finishes on 2 March.
Mardi Gras Parade
The final event of the Mardi Gras Festival, the parade features over 8,500 participants in outrageous costumes and an enormous variety of floats. Each float represents a community group, topical theme or political message to help raise wider awareness of issues important to the LGBTI community The after-party is sold out!

Cinderella

Hadestown
Join Australia’s beloved performer Christine Anu in the critically acclaimed Broadway musical Hadestown. Anu stars as Hermes in this Tony Award-winning musical, which blends American folk and New Orleans jazz to tell the mythic tale of Orpheus and Eurydice.
Alongside Anu, a stellar cast includes Abigail Adriano as Eurydice, Noah Mullins as Orpheus, and Adrian Tamburini as Hades. Hadestown explores love, doubt, and hope in a journey to the underworld, delivering a theatrical experience that is both powerful and transformative.

La Traviata
Following sold-out performances in 2024, La Traviata returns to the Sydney Opera House for a special encore season. This powerful opera tells the story of Violetta, a celebrated courtesan in Paris, who is faced with a life-altering choice when she meets the passionate Alfredo.
As she grapples with her past and her emotions, Verdi’s unforgettable score takes centre stage, from the lively Brindisi to the poignant aria Sempre libera. Director Sarah Giles adds new depth to Violetta’s inner conflict, while Charles Davis’ set and stunning costumes bring the emotional complexity of the opera to life.

Song of First Desire
From celebrated playwright Andrew Bovell (When the Rain Stops Falling, Things I Know to Be True) comes Song of First Desire, a powerful new play weaving together themes of passion, history, and the political undercurrents that shape families and nations.
The story centers on Camelia, a woman caught between past and present, who spends her days in the garden of her Madrid home. Her children bring in Alejandro, a Colombian migrant, to care for her, only for his presence to stir up buried secrets embedded in the very stones of the house. As Alejandro uncovers layers of history, a reckoning unfolds that challenges the family and the country’s long-hidden traumas.

Feeling Afraid As If Something Terrible Is Going To Happen
After a critically acclaimed London season, this razor-sharp one-person show makes its Australian debut at the Sydney Opera House. The Barber of Seville

The Pirates of Penzance
The Hayes Theatre Co and The Art House Wyong present The Pirates of Penzance, a fresh twist on the classic Gilbert & Sullivan comedy. Adapted by Richard Carroll, this bold re-imagining brings the satirical musical to life with just four actors, re-casting the timeless story for today’s audiences.
Follow the Pirate King, an adventurous yet laid-back captain; Ruth, a nursemaid-turned-pirate; Mabel, eager for excitement; and Frederic, a young man caught in an identity crisis thanks to an administrative error. With witty takes on tradition and songs by only a small cast, this adaptation promises humor and energy throughout.

Nucleus

Max Richter with the American Contemporary Music Ensemble
Renowned post-minimalist composer Max Richter returns to the Sydney Opera House in February 2025, alongside the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), to perform his deeply moving albums The Blue Notebooks and In A Landscape. The Blue Notebooks, a profound meditation on violence and war, was composed amidst the 2003 Iraq invasion and has since been celebrated as one of the century’s best classical works.
In contrast, In A Landscape offers a reflective escape, drawing inspiration from literary and musical giants like Bach and Wordsworth. This special performance promises an emotional journey through Richter’s impactful compositions, accompanied by ACME’s expert musicianship.

Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s Debut Australian Tour

Faces of Dunera: A New Exhibition at the State Library
Step into a little-known chapter of Australian history with the Faces of Dunera exhibition. In 1940, refugees fleeing Nazi persecution were transported to Australia aboard the ship Dunera and held in internment camps in Hay, Orange, and Tatura. Despite their challenging circumstances, these internees recreated elements of their former lives through art, education, and performance, producing extraordinary works and artefacts.
This exhibition showcases nearly 200 pieces, including portraits, sketchbooks, diaries, and other items from the camps. Discover the stories of these men and boys, their harrowing journey, and life beyond the barbed wire.

Peter Kingston: A Tribute Exhibition
A moving tribute to the late Peter Kingston (1943–2022), this exhibition showcases over 70 works including prints, sketchbooks, artist’s books, and printing plates from across his career. Kingston, who lived and worked by Sydney Harbour, drew inspiration from the ferries, Luna Park, and the Sydney Opera House, often incorporating personal elements like his boat, MV Anytime, and his dogs.

Explore the Wonders of Machu Picchu at the Australian Museum
This summer, dive into the rich history of ancient Peru with Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru, currently on display at the Australian Museum.
