PARKROYAL Darling Harbour Review: A Family Stay in Darling Harbour

When planning a city stay with my 6- and 8-year-old grandchildren, I wanted somewhere that would welcome them without making me feel like I was imposing. The PARKROYAL Darling Harbour got that right from the moment we arrived. I was invited to experience their family offerings and share my honest thoughts with Sydney Expert readers.

My worries about bringing energetic children to an upscale hotel disappeared quickly. The staff spoke directly to my grandchildren rather than over their heads, which matters more than most hotels realise.

Location

The hotel’s position puts family attractions within easy reach. SEA LIFE Aquarium and the Maritime Museum are a five-minute walk along the harbour, while the Darling Quarter playground – a favourite with children – is just minutes away. The walking paths are wide and stroller-friendly, perfect for families exploring Wildlife Sydney Zoo, the Australian National Maritime Museum, and other nearby attractions.

Darling Quarter’s dining precinct proved to be a highlight for our family meals. We enjoyed the casual atmosphere at Noodle Face, but the precinct offers something for every taste – from Thai to Italian, and even McDonald’s for those moments when only familiar food will do. Chinatown and Darling Square are less than 10 minutes away.

Getting to the hotel

The valet service ($65 per day) threw up one of those unexpected moments that kids talk about afterwards. When my grandson and the valet discovered they supported the same football team, there were high fives all around.

For those needing to pause before deciding on parking options, the hotel offers several temporary spots near the entrance. The spacious circular driveway gave us plenty of room to unload our luggage and get everyone safely inside. Self-parking is available at Centro Cinema Centre for $45 per 24-hour period. Tickets must be validated and paid for at hotel reception before collecting your vehicle.

If you are heading to the hotel from the airport you have three options.

  • Taxi: A 20-30 minute journey costing approximately $60
  • Train: Services run every 15 minutes from both Domestic and International terminals to Town Hall Station, with tickets around $26 via Airport Link
  • Private transfer: Can be arranged through the hotel (recommended for families with young children who need car seats)

Check-in and Welcome

Check-in starts at 2pm, with early arrival possible by arrangement. From the moment we stepped into the welcoming lobby, the staff made check-in a breeze, understanding that arrival time with excited children isn’t the moment for lengthy formalities.

The children’s eyes lit up when they received their activity packs. The binoculars might not be National Geographic quality, but they kept the kids busy for most of the stay. Back in the room they found a teepee with fairy lights and a plate of donuts, which sealed the deal as far as they were concerned.

They were delighted by the teepee they discovered in our room. There were also some donuts to enjoy while we settled. These simple touches showed how well the hotel understands what makes children happy.

As we headed out for lunch, the concierge offered a few dining suggestions. The Darling Quarter recommendation was a good one, worth asking at the desk before you head out.

Family Rooms and Amenities

For our overnight stay with two young grandchildren, our room with two queen beds worked well enough. The kids headed straight back to the teepee, which became their special hideaway for exploring their activity packs.

Two queen beds were very inviting. The kids jumped on one before I snapped this photo!

Our room overlooked the Western Distributor and Cockle Bay beyond. If you’re visiting during Vivid Sydney (held annually in May and June), you’ll catch glimpses of the light installations from the window after dark.

Much to my surprise, the freeway view became an unexpected source of entertainment, with the children playing endless games of “I Spy” during morning rush hour. Despite the busy road below, the soundproofing was excellent – we couldn’t hear any traffic noise in our room.

The smart TV proved another winner, allowing us to stream the kids’ favourite shows.

The spacious bathroom makes getting ready a breeze, there were plenty of quality towels and well-stocked supply of amenities. The only complaint from the kids: the fluffy bathrobes only came in adult sizes.

For families planning a longer stay or those with older children or wanting extra space to spread out, the Executive Suite offers a generous 71 square metres of living space. The separate living room offers a double sofa bed, so parents can enjoy the king bedroom while children have their own sleep space.

I managed to check out one of these rooms which was next door to ours and I could immediately see how the layout would work well for families needing separate spaces for bedtime routines or quiet time.

Practical touches like filtered water stations in the hallway for filling bottles and jugs saved us from needing to buy drinks.

Dining

In Room Dining

Room service proves invaluable after a long day of sightseeing. During our stay, we tested the children’s menu after an evening exploring Vivid Sydney. The service was prompt, with meals arriving within 20 minutes. Children’s meals are reasonably priced at $15, including a drink.

Our young diners particularly enjoyed the pasta, though portion sizes might be modest for hungrier children. Other kid’s options include battered fish, chicken cheeseburgers, and chicken nuggets. Side choices range from fries to mashed potato, fresh salad, or steamed vegetables.

The adult menu includes classic comfort foods like Steak Frites – perfect for parents after a busy day of family activities.

ABODE

ABODE offers the same children’s menu as room service, but it also has a bonus for parents – an excellent happy hour from Wednesday to Friday. After a busy day of sightseeing, this could be the perfect way to relax while the children enjoyed their early dinner.

Between 4:30 and 6:30pm, you can enjoy $7 beers and house wines or $15 cocktails. We thought the timing worked well with children’s dinner schedules, and the bar bites menu offered enough choices to create a casual family meal.

If you’re planning to visit during happy hour, it’s worth calling ahead to reserve a table, especially during school holidays. The number is 02 9260 2945.

BARKERS Buffet

Breakfast at BARKERS was a highlight of the kids stay. The self-service pancake machine and giant pump dispensers of Nutella were an instant hit with my grandchildren – though I suspect the novelty of making their own pancakes was as much of an attraction as eating them.

The fresh fruit bar proved another winner, with the children enjoying selecting their own combinations. While they focused on the sweet treats, I appreciated the barista-quality coffee that appeared at our table within minutes of being seated.

The buffet covers all the breakfast basics with hot dishes and cereals, and thoughtfully includes a separate gluten-free station complete with its own toaster.

Children under 12 eat free, which makes the morning ritual both enjoyable and economical. The staff are quick to help families find suitable seating and arrange highchairs for younger guests

Who should stay here?

Our overnight stay worked well. The room wasn’t enormous but the teepee and activity packs gave the kids their own space within it. The small touches — the football chat with the valet, the concierge tip, the pancake machine at breakfast — added up to a stay the grandchildren are still talking about.

If you’re exploring Darling Harbour with kids, it’s a solid base. Book a suite if you’re staying more than a night with older children; you’ll want the extra room.
